5 Things to Do NOW to De-Stress!…
So, here we all find ourselves in the middle of a Pandemic. Who doesn’t have increased stress? Even if you are not normally easily stressed or anxious, you have to admit life has gotten more stressful. Simple life tasks such as making an appointment are now more tedious. Social meet-ups now have to be choreographed ahead of time. No more dropping in on friends and relatives unexpectedly!
What Can We Do to Feel Better?…
Here are 5 Things to De-Stress Now:
- Start each day with 5 minutes or more of light stretching movement like Yoga poses or Tai Qi/ Qi Gong
- Walk 30 minutes daily. Break it up into 2 or 3 chunks if needed. I like to walk mid-day and again at night.
- Set-up a Zoom meeting to talk with friends or loved ones who are far away or self-quarantined
- Listen to a Podcast, Follow a Blog (like this one), Sign up for a Weekly Feel Good Email
- Do Deep breathing exercises daily.
- Commit to a daily meditation schedule.
- Play! Do something You Enjoy Every Day.
- Acupuncture Treatments help lower stress by helping the body move from Fight or Flight, back into Rest and Digest
I am reminded daily of a great TedTalk I watched years ago. I have the acronym saved in my phone so I see it every day. The acronym is P.O.D. The word is for “Pod” such as a pod of dolphins. The speaker of the TedTalk did research on what makes people happy. She is a doctor who saw many patients with anxiety and depression. She was looking for ways to help her patients to feel less anxious, less depressed.
What she found was that those who PLAYED every day, spent time with important OTHERS in their life and set aside DOWN TIME every day were less anxious and depressed. They were happier. Just like dolphins in a pod. Humans are social creatures, too. We need other people. Many of us realize this now more than ever as we socialize under the 6 foot distance rule.
Don’t get stuck feeling disconnected. Reach out and embrace your Pod!
P.O.D. = PLAY. OTHERS. DOWN-TIME.
I have made it a point since this to do something playful every day that makes me happy-even if it is a nature walk by myself or taking out my hacky sac for a few minutes.
Socializing with those I care about now happens daily-even if it is through Zoom or a funny back-and-forth text or phone call.
Giving yourself down time is great for your mind. I am sure to give myself time to read every night to fulfill this need.
So, be sure to spend time every day for these three to feel happy in life.
