We are in the Middle of a Pandemic.

So what can we do to possibly make our breathing air more Safe?

Ways to Improve Air Quality Now…

  • Buy a humidifier*
  • Buy a hepa filter air purification system

(I use the IQ Air Atem Air Purifier in the Clinic and at Home)

  • Wear a face mask in public places or where you cannot distance
  • Keep Home Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC)  system clean and maintenance up to date

*Dry air has been found to negatively affect mice in studies.

Mice were studied in a “dry air” group vs. a humidified “moist air” group…

“Dry air” Mice vs “Moist air” Mice

  • “Dry air” mice were more prone to the flu/ Influenza virus.
  • This is because the mucosal flow (mucous flow) in the lungs slowed down in the “dry air” mice.
  • “Dry air” mice were unable to clear the virus from their lungs.
  • “Dry air” mice got sicker (more quickly and with more severity).

Hyper hepa IQ Air Atem Air purifier in the Aleesha D Acupuncture clinic in Anoka cleans the air during your treatment.

Loving Kindness Meditation helps you feel better.

You start out by showing love and kindness to yourself…

Then to others whom you care about.

From there you move to neutral others, like mail carriers or people you have seen in the community, though you do not really know them that well.

Eventually you can even feel kindness, even love for your enemies!

Pretty powerful, eh?… Let’s get started…

First, be sure you are in a safe space to do this (no driving now)!

Sit in a chair with straight and relaxed posture.

Shoulders are relaxed. Hands rest comfortably in your lap.

Close your eyes.

Recall a pet you love(d) or a special person that you felt unconditional love for.

Maybe a special person in your life showed you unconditional love. If not, perhaps Nature has been there for you unconditionally.

You may feel sensations in your body as you bask in the gratitude for this love and acceptance.

You may feel warmth on your face.

You may feel a smile widening, naturally.

Breathe in and out, feelings of peace and acceptance.

No need to control the breath.

Just be aware of it.

Recite a Mantra.

You can say a short little mantra of words to yourself to help guide you (there are many examples).

This is one that I like to use often:

“May I be Safe.

May I be Healthy.

May I Easily Take Care of Myself.

May I Feel at Ease Wherever I Go.”

I repeat this Mantra over and over, as needed.

Maybe when you are waiting for the doctor to give you a prognosis for yourself or a loved one.

Maybe when you are going through a divorce or a death of someone close to you.

Maybe when you are laying awake at night, unable to stop thinking.

After a while (maybe a couple of weeks) of saying this mantra over and over (or another similar mantra of your choosing),

you can replace the “I” with “She” or “He” when you do Loving Kindness on a Loved one.

Eventually you can widen your scope to communities, nations, the entire world,

or if you have an enemy or anyone who you may despise or hate.

Science and Loving Kindness Meditation

Looking at fMRI on those who had logged 10,000 hours of Loving Kindness Meditation…

Evidence Based Practice has shown Loving Kindness Meditation lights up the areas of the brain responsible for Empathy.

The more one practices, the more these brain areas light up.

Oh, yeah and this type of Meditation actually helps increase EMPATHY.

Now that is something we all NEED right about NOW!

Pema Chödrön has a book called Start Where You Are. It uses a type of meditation that helps you familiarize yourself with Loving Kindness meditation, as well. She is a Buddhist nun. She grew up in the western world and is very humble in her dialogue.

John Kabat-Zinn goes into Loving Kindness Meditation a great deal on YouTube.

He also has many great books, including a great parenting book!

This can be a great journey toward moving from reactionary living to living more mindfully. It truly is life changing stuff.

TMJ Jaw Pain or Headache?

Here are 7 things to try…

  1. TMJ massage
  2. Mouth guard
  3. Body scan meditation
  4. Position of tongue
  5. Acupuncture on TMJ trigger points
  6. Holding a pencil or finger in your mouth
  7. Get Hypnotized

TMJ massage can be done on the INSIDE  of the mouth.

That is right! The inside of the mouth is massaged to release TMJ pain.

I can refer you to someone who is trained in this and gets good results with my patients!

Mouth guard may be worn at night for bruxism. Bruxism is clenching the teeth.

Dentists will make you one that fits your individual mouth.

Hopefully your insurance covers some or all of the cost of a dental mouth guard.

Also, you can buy a primitive, sports style at a pharmacy (the kind you mold to your mouth by boiling in a pot ahead of time).

Body scan with Jon Kabat-Zinn is helpful as a meditation.

This is free on YouTube. It lasts about forty minutes.

I am always shocked how there is tension somewhere in my body that I was not aware of holding!

Tongue Position can make a difference. Hold your tongue behind your upper front teeth/on the roof of your mouth.

This is called your hard palate. Practice holding your tongue here in a resting position as much as possible.

Yogis often focus on keeping the tongue in this position.

-Over time you will get used to doing this, as with anything you practice.

Acupuncture works great when needles are placed within the TMJ trigger points. Headache points may be used as well.

Most patients feel better the first time and have marked results after a few treatments.

Holding a pencil or even your pointer finger in between your front upper and lower teeth can train the teeth to stay apart.

I did this for two weeks, about 10 minutes per day–usually while typing posts like this.

I found that at first I kept biting my own finger and the pencil showed teeth marks afterward.

-Eventually I was able to train myself to stop clenching so there were no teeth marks.

Hey-be sure to use a brand new pencil (without teeth marks).

Hee-hee!

Hypnosis- Someone close to me tried a hypnotist to stop clenching and it worked!

This individual damaged teeth for years due to the constant day and night jaw clenching.

I know someone who is trained and has had success with this and can refer you, if needed.

Is Acupuncture good for Ringing in the Ear (a.k.a., “Tinnitus”)?

I get this question all the time.

The short answer is, “Maybe.”

Tinnitus is helped with acupuncture about 50% of the time.

Why Not Acupuncture for Tinnitus?

This is because the cause for tinnitus can be from many things.

Often nerve damage has taken place.

Sometimes the damage comes from injury, surgery or from too loud of noises over time, like the workplace or loud concerts.

Causes of Tinnitus

  • Respiratory infection
  • Nerve damage
  • Injury
  • Stress

Symptoms of Tinnitus

  • High pitched or Low pitched ringing in the ear(s)
  • buzzing sound
  • hissing sound
  • humming sound
  • Comes and goes or Constant
  • Minor or Severe

When to See a Doctor

  • As with anytime you experience something suddenly or severely (or both), see your doctor
  • Occurring after Respiratory infection or Cold
  • with dizziness
  • with hearing loss

If there is hearing loss, waiting to see a doctor may result in more nerve damage (if there is damage) and/or more hearing loss.

Better to see a doctor to be sure before it is too late.

After all, it is one of your five senses.

Transparency in Treatments

This is why I am very honest with people when they ask if I can help with Tinnitus.

I can try, though do not want to see someone throw their money away if it does not work.

Of course, when it does work, then it is worth it.

I think it is always important to have transparency when you see anyone about anything.

Getting the upfront possible outcomes makes it easier to decide on whether or not to try acupuncture, or anything in life.

Research Proves Acupuncture Helps with…

What is proven to work is Acupuncture on Pain and Inflammation.

Back pain, headaches, chronic pain, joint pain, muscle pain, period cramps, etc.

What is Qi Gong?

Qi Gong is an energy practice. It is very old. It is useful to relax the body and mind. Qi gong uses breathing and movement.

We were required to take Qi Gong classes in grad school as soon-to-be licensed acupuncturists.

It is used by many in Asia to promote longevity, and a clear mind. You can use it, too!

I like to start each day and end each day doing the breathing exercise followed by the movement for 5 minutes total.

I know you are “supposed” to practice these exercises longer. Like 5 minutes each for the breathing and movement. If you can do 10 minutes every morning and night, that is even better.

but… I know myself. Pigeonholing myself into that rigid way of “all or nothing” thinking just doesn’t do it for me.

There are too many rabbit holes for me to go down each one completely.

Many of us are like this.

It’s not that I don’t want to follow rules, it’s just that if I have to follow rules that don’t fit my lifestyle, I just won’t do it.

It has to be easy enough to add one more thing to my day. Or, out it goes!

So, I settle on doing it for 5 minutes every morning and again 5 minutes every night. Do what you can.

Compliance is better than no compliance.

Make peace with wherever you are at.

What is Qi?

Qi is our Life force Energy.

Qi travels through our body’s Meridians.

What are Meridians?

Think of Meridians as highways where energy (or Qi) travels.

Meridians are Energy Pathways.

Why Move the Qi?

When Qi gets stagnated (stuck), we can become ill in body and/or mind.

We want to keep the Qi free-flowing to maintain health.

A physical example is when scar tissue forms (stagnation) after surgery.

Once the skin has created that matrix of protection in scar tissue, acupuncture can help break up the stagnation or scar tissue. Things like numbness, lack of sensation there and pronounced scarring can all be helped with acupuncture. Many are amazed by scars healing better after acupuncture. About 6 weeks after a caesarean section (C-section) acupuncture can help to start to diminish the abdominal scar. (Sorry, shameless plug).

A mental example of Qi getting stuck is called “Qi Stagnation” and this shows up as irritability or depression, and possibly bitter taste in the mouth or rib-side pain. Acupuncturists call it “Liver Qi Stagnation” and it is common in the Western world here. Acupuncture helps this in people every day. Qi gong can help your mood and focus over time, too.

Here is a short Qi Gong breathing exercise Intro…

Qi Gong breathing:

Inhale, extend your abdomen, allowing it to fill with air.

Exhale, contracting abdomen while you release the air. Feel it first coming from the bottom of your lungs. Push the air up and out until you feel your abdomen and chest are like a deflated balloon.

As you breathe in, imagine your Qi flowing through all the channels in your body.

Guide the flow of your Qi through breathing easy and gentle. Do not try to force it through.

Do the same as you breathe out. If visualizing helps, do that.

Here is a short Qi Gong Movement Exercise:

Start movement from the waist, keeping it soft and gentle. Start swaying slowly from the waist.

Move your arms in a swaying motion. Sway your arms side to side across your torso, gently.

Your arms may land on your torso in the front and back of your body.

Knees are slightly bent.

Hips may sway with the movement.

I like to end by giving myself a generous, yet gentle bear hug.

Especially now during COVID-19.

I have not hugged my kid in six months…Maybe give yourself two bear hugs.

Qi gong can help us to relax. We can learn to re-program our bodies and minds to be more mindful, less reactive. Less anxious.

Remember, be gentle. This gentle movement can be a useful tool to help wake up your body first thing and also to wind down the body and mind, letting it know that you are respectfully preparing it for sleep in a gentle, caring, and mindful way.

5 Things to Do NOW to De-Stress!…

So, here we all find ourselves in the middle of a Pandemic. Who doesn’t have increased stress? Even if you are not normally easily stressed or anxious, you have to admit life has gotten more stressful. Simple life tasks such as making an appointment are now more tedious. Social meet-ups now have to be choreographed ahead of time. No more dropping in on friends and relatives unexpectedly!

What Can We Do to Feel Better?…

Here are 5 Things to De-Stress Now:

  1. Start each day with 5 minutes or more of light stretching movement like Yoga poses or Tai Qi/ Qi Gong
  2. Walk 30 minutes daily. Break it up into 2 or 3 chunks if needed. I like to walk mid-day and again at night.
  3. Set-up a Zoom meeting to talk with friends or loved ones who are far away or self-quarantined
  4. Listen to a Podcast, Follow a Blog (like this one), Sign up for a Weekly Feel Good Email
  5. Do Deep breathing exercises daily.
  6. Commit to a daily meditation schedule.
  7. Play! Do something You Enjoy Every Day.
  8. Acupuncture Treatments help lower stress by helping the body move from Fight or Flight, back into Rest and Digest

I am reminded daily of a great TedTalk I watched years ago. I have the acronym saved in my phone so I see it every day. The acronym is P.O.D. The word is for “Pod” such as a pod of dolphins. The speaker of the TedTalk did research on what makes people happy. She is a doctor who saw many patients with anxiety and depression. She was looking for ways to help her patients to feel less anxious, less depressed.

What she found was that those who PLAYED every day, spent time with important OTHERS in their life and set aside DOWN TIME every day were less anxious and depressed. They were happier. Just like dolphins in a pod. Humans are social creatures, too. We need other people. Many of us realize this now more than ever as we socialize under the 6 foot distance rule.

Don’t get stuck feeling disconnected. Reach out and embrace your Pod!

P.O.D. = PLAY. OTHERS. DOWN-TIME.

I have made it a point since this to do something playful every day that makes me happy-even if it is a nature walk by myself or taking out my hacky sac for a few minutes.

Socializing with those I care about now happens daily-even if it is through Zoom or a funny back-and-forth text or phone call.

Giving yourself down time is great for your mind. I am sure to give myself time to read every night to fulfill this need.

So, be sure to spend time every day for these three to feel happy in life.

Happy like dolphins in a Pod.

Did You Know Acupuncture is Good for Boosting Your Immunity?

Acupuncture has long been used for Colds and Flu.

Acupuncture is also very good at helping the body’s stress response. This helps the body return to homeostasis.

Want to Get Out of Fight or Flight and back to Rest and Digest?–Get Some Acupuncture.

Acupuncture lights up the Morphine Center of the Brain.

–This explains how it helps with Pain, Stress, Depression and Anxiety, too.

Try some Acupressure Points at Home for Immunity (avoid some if Pregnant)…

  • *He gu or Large Intestine 4 (LI-4)-Located between the first two fingers, in between the bones.

Spot may be sensitive if headache-prone (good point for all types of headaches, too). LI-4 should not be massaged as an acupressure point during pregnancy, according to the ancient texts.

  • Tsu San or Stomach 36 (ST-36)- Located about four inches below the outside “eye” of the knee cap. About one inch out lateral from bone.

  • *San Yin Chiao or Spleen 6 (SP-6)- Located about 4 inches above the inside ankle bone, behind the tibia (inner) leg bone. Sp-6 should not be massaged as an acupressure point during pregnancy, according to the ancient texts.

Acupressure technique: Try gently massaging the three above-mentioned points for 15-30 seconds at a time a couple of times per day for Immunity.

*Contra-indicated in Pregnancy: Sp-6 and LI-4 are typically not used during pregnancy due to the powerful stimulation of Qi (Energy) at these points. This is why these points are considered too moving during pregnancy, per ancient texts.

Acupuncture: These are a few of the same acupuncture points that acupuncturists use when treating patients for immunity.

Acupuncture for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or PTS…

PTS(D) has been shortened to PTS.

Drop the “D” and Drop the Stigma.

This is a VERY REAL issue that more folks than you think (and their loved ones) must deal with.

Why Acupuncture for PTS:

  • Sleep
  • Energy
  • Anxiety
  • Drug-free
  • Mild to Moderate Depression

Most report on how much better their sleep is after Acupuncture.

Anxiety and Depression improves. Energy gets better.

Brain fog and memory around fuzzy thinking seems to lift along with the mood.

Overall, PTS patients report improvement in their Quality of Life (QOL).

Most people now days are looking for a drug-free alternative for their PTS issues. Acupuncture provides that medical alternative. Licensed acupuncturists pay a state medical tax to provide acupuncture medical therapy.

Findings of PTSD Research & Acupuncture on Depression, Anxiety and Impairment…

  1. Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) shows Acupuncture improvement in PTSD compared to a Waitlist Control Group with no improvement.
  2. Therapeutic effects on PTSD of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acupuncture was about the same.
  3. Research shows Acupuncture and SSRI treatment had no significant difference.

SSRI’s are a class of  seretonin Reuptake Inhibitors anti-depressant drugs.

SSRI’s are the most commonly prescribed anti-depressants. They treat moderate to severe depression.

   4. More Trials are needed in order to prove what the evidence suggests on how acupuncture can improve PTS(D) issues. This is how science works. We need to be able to measure the same thing over and over and over again in order to prove that something works the way the evidence seems to indicate.

More money is spent on researching Acupuncture and Pain relief. The U.S.A. military has spent a lot on studying acupuncture and pain.

One pain protocol that I use at times for severe pain was started by the military and is called, “Battlefield Acupuncture.”

Interestingly enough, I only claim acupuncture can help with mild to moderate depression. This is because not enough research is available as of yet to show it significantly helping with severe depression. This is also because acupuncture is not a replacement for prescribed antidepressants. One must always work with one’s doctor before tapering from prescribed medications.

5 Ways to Improve Your Pain Tolerance. But, first…

Where Low Pain Tolerance Comes From

  • Trauma
  • PTSD/ PTS
  • Genetics
  • Pandemics/ Disasters/ Wars

Your Pain Tolerance can say a lot about you.

Interestingly, studies have found red heads to have lower pain tolerance. There may be more than one factor at play…

Genetics can influence our Pain Tolerance, according to research. In my clinical experience, this is often true.

Trauma- Having a low pain threshold can come from past trauma such as early childhood trauma, including abuse/neglect.

It can also be a response from adult trauma or abuse.

Natural Disasters, Wars and Pandemics increase the stress response and can affect Pain.

PTSD is a condition that can affect Pain tolerance. It is often called PTS (dropping the “D” for Disorder can lessen the stigma).

Pandemics can cause a form of PTSD or PTS.

Did You Know?…Acupuncture can be effective for the PTSD Person suffering with Anxiety, Sleep and Stress. It is true. I have seen it and experienced it.

5 Ways to Improve Your Pain Tolerance (Reasons it May be Low)…

  1. Sleep
  2. Stress-Reduce it!
  3. Stress-Take on Less
  4. Movement
  5. Breathing
  6. Talk Therapy
  7. Meditation

By the Way, Acupuncture is Great for Pain!

How does Acupuncture Work on Pain?…

Acupuncture Activates the Nervous System which then tells the brain to release pain-relieving chemicals like endorphins.

Sleep- Sleep is huge! Sleep is when your body repairs. Those who have a deficit of sleep show lower pain tolerance.

Stress- If Stress makes Pain Worse, then Let’s lower our Stress. There are ways we can improve our stress. It is true that sometimes genetics has an influence. However, we do not need to take on new stress. Say “No” to new responsibilities if you are already stressed. Reduce the stress you already have (see other ways on the above list to help).

Movement- We can do daily movement. If we are too stressed out to do strenuous exercise (like H.I.I.T. training) or Hot Yoga, we can opt for slower, more gentle options. This is often not a very Western way to look at self-improvement. We often think we need to Go-Go-Go and Work-Work-Work. We think Faster and More is better. Well, I am here to tell you that in my early twenties I had a lesson in this…

I did Qigong for the first time for 45 minutes and didn’t think anything of it other than it was an interesting activity to try that “old” people do just to do something…Boy was I WRONG. DEAD WRONG. Then next day I awoke to soreness in muscles everywhere. Muscles I did not even know I had. Movements like Qigong (Chigong), TaiChi and Gentle Yoga stretches can have a profound positive effect on our bodies since they use all muscles. Sometimes keeping muscles taut and stretching them gently in order to release long-held stress.

Meditation is great for reducing stress. I am a lifelong participant and recommend DAILY practice to reduce your stress. It has even been proven to lower blood pressure! Perhaps this is why doctors of old would prescribe petting a cat to their bp patients.

Meditation Resources Here

Breathing exercises- Becoming aware of the breath can be a life saver for stressful times in our lives. Hey! We will always be jumping through hoops of fire in life. We need to train ourselves to stop and breathe. Like acupuncture, breathing can get you out of the Fight or Flight and back into the Rest and Digest. I like a few techniques and will share two:

  1. The 1-2 count: Breathe in on count of 1; breathe out on count of 1. Then breathe in on count of 2; breathe out on count of 2. Repeat. If you forget which number you are on, start at 1 again. So Simple. The brain can easily return to this even when stress is causing fuzzy thinking.
  2. The 4-7-8 Breathe in for a count of 4-hold breath for a count of 7-exhale out for a count of 8. This one helped me be able to hold my breath for over a minute! It takes practice so start slowly. Check with your doctor before holding your breath longer than this exercise.

Talk Therapy- Many with intensified pain have had Childhood trauma, especially during the early formative years (ages 1-3) and also on up to age 7. I am not going to get real science-y here and you can do your own further research into this. Just know that the memory of trauma affects the nerves when the brain is “triggered” and we carry these traumas in our tissues. Ever feel the stress in an injured area of your body?-It is kind of like this.

These days almost everyone has seen a talk therapist so get the stigma right out of your head! Seeking help from a licensed therapist can help you to see why you are holding stress in your body and you can begin (under the care of a professional) to work through this and improve your body’s response to stress and your ability to improve your pain tolerance can follow.

These days therapy can be done through virtual means (in the middle of a pandemic) thanks to companies like Telehealth and Zoom. No excuses. Take care of yourself. Time for Self Care. Especially during a Pandemic, do the Self-Care.

Remember, our Minds and Bodies are Connected into this one Being we call Self. Often, emotional pain goes un-noticed until physical pain manifests. And it ALWAYS Manifests Physically, eventually. Now, go take care of Yourself. You are investing in Your Now Self & Your Future Self. Show them both some Love. Perhaps the Love & Care You did Not Get in Childhood.

Check Back for a Great Stress Reduction Therapy You Can do Anywhere. Anytime.

Why Does Vitamin D Deficiency Seem to be the New Norm?

  • Change in Diet
  • Change in Chemicals sprayed on our Food
  • Diet & Chemical Effect on our Gut (Vitamin D Deficiency)

Why was vitamin d deficiency not a problem in Grandma’s day?…

People used to get their vitamin d from foods such as lard, fish and whole milk with natural vitamin d already in the foods. Lard with vitamin d is more difficult to find. Less people drink full fat milk with vitamin d, and even less eat fish, especially cod liver. There is not enough natural occurring vitamin d in cod liver oil supplements for most people who are deficient in lab results. So if low in d, you probably still need to supplement as well and need to check with your doctor on this before doing so anyway.

I remember my dad used to make me eat a cod fish oil capsule every week. When I asked him “Why?” he just said, “‘Cuz it’s good for you.” I don’t think he really knew why. He took it because his grandma told him to. Being Swedish, she probably knew it was necessary to eat oil from the the liver of cod. Swedes are low in vitamin d, too unless they supplement with food or supplements due to also being far from the equator. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, your body makes vitamin d, BUT…

that only applies if you are close enough to the equator. For those of us who live in the northern latitude of the world (like Minnesota) exposure of arms and legs for 15-20 minutes per day should suffice during the summer; during the fall and winter months you will most likely have to take a vitamin d supplement if your labs reveal deficiency. This is because you could lay out naked all day in the sun during the winter without it affecting your vitamin d synthesis. We are just not at the correct angle in relation to the sun here at that time. That is why some call vitamin d the “Sunshine vitamin.”  Check with your doctor to be sure vitamin d supplementation is right for you before doing so.

There is also the thing about The Pesticides used here in the U.S.A. since the 1970’s.

This insecticide (outlawed in much of Europe) blocks vitamin D absorption in the gut. Yikes!

Summary of Vitamin D Deficiency

  • Heart Health
  • Bone Health
  • Worldwide Problem
  • Energy and/or Mood
  • Checked with Blood Test

So, look out for Low Mood and Low Energy-it Could be Low Vitamin D. Ask your doctor to order a blood test to screen for vitamin d deficiency. If it is not low, then you have ruled out one possible cause to your low energy and mood. Note: many doctors in private practice (like my primary care doc) actually like to see vitamin d level higher than what conventional family medicine doctors deem as “healthy range” levels of vitamin d. Why? This is because vitamin d level can be high enough to keep you alive, though may not be “optimal” for your health as an individual.

If you take blood thinners like Coumadin® avoid taking the liquid vitamin d with k2 vitamin as vitamin k can interfere with the effects of this drug. Otherwise vitamin k is added because it can help with vitamin d absorption. Always check with your doctor first before adding anything to your supplements regimen.

Naturopathic doctors look at this way as well. Like acupuncturists, we look at medicine from a prevention perspective. It is a different medical paradigm than the Western one which is focused on treating a disease. Both types of medicine are needed and each has its time and place, for sure.
